On August 4, 2025, the world lost a truly remarkable man, Charles Raymond “Charlie” Varner, Jr., who passed away peacefully at Novant Health-Wilmington at the age of 74. Born on September 24, 1950, in Greensboro, NC, Charlie lived a life filled with passion, dedication, and love.

Charlie spent his formative years in Guilford County, North Carolina, where he embraced his southern roots and developed a strong work ethic. He later moved to the beautiful East Coast beaches of Wilmington, NC, where he continued to enrich the lives of those around him.

Charlie's professional life was marked by his commitment and talent in the painting industry. As a commercial painter, he brought color and life to countless projects. Rising to the position of Vice President at Greensboro Paint Company, he served with distinction for 10 years. Most recently, he applied his skills and leadership at New Hanover Coatings in Wilmington, working diligently until two weeks prior to his passing. His colleagues were more than co-workers; they were like family to him.

In his personal life, Charlie was a man of varied interests. He loved the thrill of riding motorcycles on the open roads and crafting intricate remote-control airplanes that he skillfully flew. The beach was his sanctuary, where he could often be found fishing and enjoying the simple pleasures of life.

A man of the Southern Baptist faith, Charlie was blessed with a loving family, including his devoted wife of 25 years, Carol Darnell Varner, and his beloved daughter Rebecca Varner, who was the apple of his eye; if she said "Daddy, I want," her wish was his command. She was his everything.

A devoted family man, he is also survived by his daughters, Tiffany Varner of Henderson, Emily Varner of Henderson, Ashley Darnell of Reidsville, Sarah Darnell of Eden, Heather McAuthor of Greensboro and Jenna Pleasant of Greensboro; son, Thomas Darnell of Yanceyville; grandchildren, Caleb McAuthor, Kara McAuthor, Joseph McAuthor, Anna Grace, Jonathan Wade, Jaela Wade, Sydnee Marsh, Bryan Wilson, Devin Wilson, Justin Wilson, Annabell Wilson, Kevin Wilson, Kendra Darnell, Aiyanna Darnell, KéThanel Cardwell, Jenny Cardwell, Alexander Smith, Caroline Varner Smithfield, Faith Varner, Lesley Smyre and Lanie Smyre; great-granddaughter, baby girl who is on the way; sisters, Becky Lawson and her husband, Niall of Clarkston, along with Brenda McDaniel, Ellen Hefner and Jerry Ashley. Last but not least, his beloved dog, Coco.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Raymond Varner, Sr.; mother, Norma (Ashley) Varner; daughter, Jenny Darnell and his granddaughter, Freya Smith.

Charlie was a quiet man with a quick-witted sense of humor. He lived life on his own terms and believed in enjoying each day as it came. Never one to stress too much, he approached challenges with a calm demeanor. His favorite advice? A laid-back, "you'll figure it out."

Charlie leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and joy. His family and friends take comfort in knowing that he lived a full and happy life, inspiring those around him to cherish every moment.

A celebration of Charlie's life will be held at a later date back home. Until then, the world is just a little less colorful without him in it.

May Charlie rest in peace, remembered for simply living life fully, with a paintbrush in one hand and fishing pole in the other, and the genuine love for those he held dear.
